Fastening Top Heavy Items

An item that is top-heavy is at higher risk of toppling in horizontal movement and requires additional holding strength for fastening. Best results are achieved by using fasteners on the base and tethering the top of the equipment with a strap (Fig. E below).

At least 50% more holding strength is recommended to fasten an item that is twice as tall as it is wide for the equivalent center of gravity), 100% more if 3:1, and 150% more if 4:1. These percentages apply to the values shown in the WEIGHT RANGE CHART on the previous page.

Fastener Removal - Instructions: Place a business card or piece of plastic under a tack remover or similar tool to prevent scratches. Insert tip of tool under edge of fastener. Apply upward pressure (DO NOT PRY). The edge of the fastener will begin to lift up in 5-10 seconds. As edge lifts up, move tool inward with continued lifting pressure. When edge is high enough, remove fastener by hand. Remove any remaining adhesive by dabbing it off with the adhesive pad on the fastener. If a large piece remains, it should be "peeled" off (not rubbed off) for removal. The adhesive will not leave a surface residue.
